Banff

Alberta, Canada

Whenever anyone asks for a “not too far” or “easy vacation”, I ALWAYS recommend a trip to Banff. Great for all ages, and only a 3 hr flight from LAX to Calgary. Also, one of the most beautiful places I have ever been.

TIPS

  • We visited Banff in the middle of September, which happened to be right after their first snow. Aside from experiencing a bit of mud and ice on a couple of hikes, it was truly a beautiful time to visit. The trees had a bit of snow on them, and we were still able to catch part of Larch Season.

Larch season occurs from mid-September to early October, and it is when the larch leaves in Larch Valley turn a beautiful golden hue.

Considering to go to Banff during ski season would also be a great idea. Banff is home to three different ski resorts that are all included on the IKON Pass.

  • The closest airport to Banff is Calgary’s International Airport (YYC), located 87 miles from Banff. Shuttle options are available (about $75/ pp one-way), but for flexibility we rented a car.

I would recommend to land earlier in the day to be able to enjoy the scenic drive as you enter the great National Park.

  • Layers!

Of course this is dependent on the time of year you wish to travel so pack accordingly.

The city of Banff is quite casual. For dinner I would wear jeans, a sweater, and boots layered under my long Patagonia puffer as it did get cooler in the evenings.

For hikes I would wear leggings, a long-sleeve tee (1 or 2 depending on whether the sun was out), under my short Patagonia puffer. Gloves, scarf, and a beanie are also a must!

  • We stayed in Banff for 4 nights and 5 days, which I believe is the perfect amount of time.

Depending on whether you would also like to drive to Jasper, I would also tack one another 1-2 nights.
